Scientists make discovery that changes what we know about The Giant’s Causeway

Scientists have updated the understanding of Northern Ireland's volcanic history, revealing that the Giant’s Causeway formed during a major globally impacting volcanic event. Geochronologists discovered that the Antrim coastline's 40,000 interlocking basalt columns developed over 5.5 million years, which is 8 million years less than previously thought. These distinctive formations occurred approximately 60 million years ago, confirming that intense volcanic activity, rather than legendary battles, created this globally significant geological site on the coastline.
