Industrial poultry farming has triggered a more than 100-fold increase in the spread of bacteria causing food poisoning. Scientists found that intensive chicken farming creates ideal conditions for campylobacter to evolve and accelerate the spread of the world's most common bacterial cause of diarrhoea. The study highlights a dramatic increase in strain exchange between wild birds and chickens, alongside a rise in antimicrobial resistance traits, making serious human illnesses potentially more difficult to treat.
