Man arrested in Cyprus in first overseas National Security Act investigation

Rashad Sultanov, a 44-year-old dual UK and Azerbaijani national, was arrested on 17 July in Cyprus. This marks the first investigation using the National Security Act regarding offences in an overseas territory. Sultanov is accused of conducting hostile surveillance at RAF Akrotiri and sharing information, allegedly spying for Iran. The probe was led by Counter Terrorism Policing London, and charges have been authorised against the man for his suspected activities at the RAF base.
