Record high for referrals to Prevent anti-terror scheme including 20% rise for rightwing extremism

Referrals to the government's Prevent anti-terror programme have reached a record high, with 10,293 cases reported in the year to September 2025. This represents a 39% increase from the previous 7,408 referrals. Notably, referrals for extreme rightwing ideology rose by 20%. The Home Office suggests that the 10-year peak in these figures could be linked to the 2024 Southport attacks. This is the highest number of referrals recorded since the programme's data collection began 11 years ago.
