The UK will experience its largest solar eclipse since 1999 on 12 August. While BBC Science Focus notes that approximately two solar eclipses occur annually, they remain rare from a terrestrial perspective. Dr Alistair Gunn from the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester explains that solar eclipses are less frequent than lunar eclipses because the Moon's shadow covers a much smaller area of the Earth during the event.
