Health secretary Yvette Cooper has stated that women must not feel pressured to achieve an ideal birth. Following several damning maternity scandals, Cooper has promised a root-and-branch reform of standards. National maternity standards are set to be reintroduced to improve care. Returning to the department after 27 years, Cooper intends for maternity and child health to be a major focus, alongside implementing significant reforms to social care to improve overall healthcare outcomes for women.
